Pau, a fantastic university town with breathtaking architecture, is the capital of the Bearn region. Its Chateau was the birthplace of Henry IV in 1553. It is well worth a visit on a Saturday morning to see its covered market selling excellent produce and flowers. Visit the Musee de Beaux Arts to see the works by Degas, Rubens and El Greco.
